How To Speak So People Listen

How to reduce your credibility robbers

The first and most important step towards being more impactful in your communication is to become aware of your credibility robbers. The fastest way to find out if credibility robbers are causing you trouble is to use recordings of yourself in meetings.

To get the most amount of observational feedback from your video recordings, watch them a number of times. Especially observe the first seven seconds, both with and without sound.

1. Visual Review:

  • Mute the audio
  • Press play
  • Watch yourself
  • Takes notes on your visual image - Resting hands (truth and trust plane/steeple). Gestures (Palm flash/ gestures like listing, this and that). Eye connection (one thought > one person). Stance - Face (Smiles). Feet (both planted and pointing to the audience). Posture (height and space). Head (balanced).

2. Auditory Review:

  • Turn the sound
  • Press pay
  • Turn away and listen
  • Take notes on your vocal foundations - Pauses, non-words, pace, & pitch

3. Once you have observed yourself, pick something to "dial-up" in each interaction over the next week.

4. At the end of the week, pick an internal (safe) meeting and ask a colleague to video you for 90 seconds using your mobile device. This can be done discreetly.

5. Watch the video and score yourself 1-5 for the nonverbal you are improving.

6. Rinse and repeat.
